a quick break from my studies for this post:

a lot of cafes are emerging in berkeley and im not complaining. in fact, im going to miss all the cafes in the bay area. there’s still so many places i want to visit (cafes included)…

Local 123 | i wont post a picture for this one because i think it’d be better if you saw it for yourself. this place is all about local sourcing. from my one visit here, there was nothing to complain. decent availability of outlets, good wi-fi, nice music, and friendly staff. (elmwood no more)

the albacore melt is served on a baron bagel (from oakland) with fresh arugula on top. delicious. their ginger cookie goes nicely with the iced americano.

i thought the lighting was too dim at first, it’s actually perfect for studying. they have really nice wall decos but my favorite thing about this place is the layout. optimal circulation for its given type of space. and there’s even an outdoor area in the back. 9/10.

it’s located on the corner of 65th street and san pablo avenue; right where oakland meets emeryville. there a huge window facing the residential part that provides a nice breeze without all the street noise.

there’s several outdoor tables that gives you a nice option and this place is filled with quad electrical outlets. there’s two loveseats right by the huge window and some ikea coffee tables. it feels like you’re studying at your friend’s place or something. the wi-fi is kind of slow but it works. they take cash and card, and there’s plenty of free street parking spaces available. no meters or anything. the only exception is that you can’t park during the hours of 12am to 3am, but i’m sure you won’t be there at those times.

pictured above; iced americano and walnut cookie. the cookie is packed with flavors. it’s got a crumbly texture that resembles a shortbread. pretty darn good.

Smitten Ice Cream makes their ice creams on the spot. My favorite combination is the creme fraiche flavor ice cream with pear caramel. Apparently, this flavor is only available in September.

Ritual Coffee Roasters. First time. Good latte. That’s all.
I’d recommend checking out Hayes Valley in SF. It’s a nice neighborhood with boutique stores, restaurants, and confectioneries. And on a nice day, you can definitely relax at Patricia’s Green Park with some ice cream.

They’re currently traveling across the nation and hosting showrooms. I was fortunate enough to run into them unexpectedly while they were in SF. I thought it was really neat how they used a school bus as their show room.

They have some cool hip frames. And like TOMS, if you buy a pair, they give a pair to someone in need. Check them out.

I don’t normally write reviews for places, but i thought i’d try to leave some remarks for a couple of places that’s left an impression. After 4 years of just passing by, I finally stopped by Babette on Durant Ave.

It’s located right within the BAMPFA (Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). Perhaps it’s the fact that the cafe is adjacent to a museum, but it definitely reminded me of de Young Cafe at the de Young Museum.

Not sure about what the food is like (though they look appetizing), but the ambiance is near perfect. They have a long table along the glass facade with stools and a concrete base that you can rest your feet on. (I’m a sucker for window seats with stools). They even have discrete little outlets along the concrete base. And since the glass glazing is actually offset by about 4 feet, glare is minimal and temperature is just right.

Iced Americano was too watered down and the chocolate hazelnut cookie was too dry and crumbly. I would definitely recommend it for either studying or for casual conversation.

Wifi - yes. (AirBears)
Outlets - some.
Credit cards - yes.

Except the only thing is that they close early at 4:30pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends.
